NFL Playoff Format Explained: Seeding, Byes and the Bracket

The NFL playoff format sends 14 teams to the postseason, seven from the AFC and seven from the NFC. In each conference, the four division winners are seeded 1 through 4 by record, and the three best non-division winners are the wild cards, seeded 5 through 7. Only the No. 1 seed gets a first-round bye, every game is single elimination, the higher seed hosts until the Super Bowl, and the bracket reseeds after the first round so the top seed always faces the lowest seed left (NBC Sports).

The format is unchanged for the 2026 season. None of the rules, bylaws or resolutions owners approved in 2026 touch playoff seeding (NFL.com).

How does the NFL playoff format work?

The NFL playoff format works the same way in both conferences:

Seed Who gets it First round
1 Division winner with the best record Bye, hosts in the Divisional Round
2 Division winner with the second-best record Hosts No. 7
3 Division winner with the third-best record Hosts No. 6
4 Division winner with the fourth-best record Hosts No. 5
5 Wild card with the best record Plays at No. 4
6 Wild card with the second-best record Plays at No. 3
7 Wild card with the third-best record Plays at No. 2

A division title outranks record. A division winner is always seeded ahead of every wild card, however many more games the wild card won.

NFL playoff bracket, round by round

The NFL playoff bracket has four rounds and 13 games. Dates below are the league's schedule for the 2026 season (NFL.com):

Round Games Matchups 2026 season dates
Wild Card 6 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5 in each conference Jan 16 to 18, 2027
Divisional 4 No. 1 vs lowest remaining seed; other two survivors meet Jan 23 to 24, 2027
Conference Championships 2 The two remaining teams in each conference Jan 31, 2027
Super Bowl LXI 1 AFC champion vs NFC champion Feb 14, 2027, SoFi Stadium

The Super Bowl is the only game played at a site chosen in advance rather than at the higher seed's stadium.

How does reseeding work in the NFL playoffs?

Reseeding in the NFL playoffs means the Divisional Round matchups are not fixed in advance. After the Wild Card round, the No. 1 seed plays the lowest seed still alive, and the other two winners meet at the stadium of the higher seed (NBC Sports).

The 2025-26 AFC bracket shows how it works. The No. 2 Patriots beat the No. 7 Chargers 16-3, the No. 6 Bills won 27-24 at the No. 3 Jaguars, and the No. 5 Texans won 30-6 at the No. 4 Steelers. That left seeds 2, 5 and 6. The No. 1 Broncos hosted the lowest survivor, Buffalo, and won 33-30 in overtime, while New England hosted Houston and won 28-16 (Wikipedia, NFL.com). If playoff games go to overtime, different rules apply than in the regular season; our guide to NFL overtime rules covers both.

The NFC side ended with the No. 1 Seahawks, who won Super Bowl LX 29-13 over New England on February 8, 2026 (ESPN).

Why do division winners get a home playoff game?

Division winners get a home playoff game because the NFL seeds all four division champions ahead of the wild cards, regardless of record. The 2025 season showed the effect: the Carolina Panthers won the NFC South at 8-9 and hosted the 12-5 Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round (NFL.com). The Rams won 34-31 on the road.

The Detroit Lions proposed changing this in 2025. Their plan would have guaranteed a home playoff game only to the division winner with the best record in each conference and seeded the rest of the field strictly by record. The Lions withdrew it before a vote at the May 2025 league meeting in Eagan, Minnesota, because it lacked enough support from owners (ESPN).

How NFL playoff tiebreakers work

NFL playoff tiebreakers decide both division titles and wild card spots when teams finish with the same record. Tie games count as half a win and half a loss. For two teams tied for a division, the first steps are (NFL.com):

  1. Head-to-head record.
  2. Record within the division.
  3. Record in common games.
  4. Record within the conference.
  5. Strength of victory, then strength of schedule.

For two wild card contenders from different divisions, the order starts with head-to-head (if they played), then conference record, then record in common games with a minimum of four, followed by strength of victory and strength of schedule. Points-based steps follow, and a coin toss is the final resort.

How the NFL playoff format has changed

The current NFL playoff format dates to the 2020 season. Owners approved expanding the field from 12 to 14 teams in March 2020, adding a seventh team in each conference. Under the old format, the top two seeds in each conference received byes; since 2020, only the No. 1 seed does (NFL.com). The change means 43.7% of the league's 32 teams make the playoffs each year.

Jerseys from the last playoff run

Super Bowl LX featured two young quarterbacks, both in the store: the Sam Darnold Seahawks jersey and the Drake Maye Patriots jersey. The AFC's top seed is covered too with the Bo Nix Broncos jersey, and every team is on the NFL jerseys page.

Frequently asked questions

How many teams make the NFL playoffs?

Fourteen teams make the NFL playoffs: seven from the AFC and seven from the NFC. Each conference sends its four division winners plus three wild cards, the non-division winners with the best records. The league has used this 14-team format since the 2020 season, when it expanded from 12 teams.

How many teams get a bye in the NFL playoffs?

Two teams get a bye in the NFL playoffs, one per conference. Only the No. 1 seed in the AFC and the No. 1 seed in the NFC skip Wild Card weekend. Before the 2020 expansion, the top two seeds in each conference had byes, so four teams rested that weekend.

Does the NFL reseed the playoffs?

Yes. After the Wild Card round, the NFL reseeds each conference so the No. 1 seed hosts the lowest seed still remaining. The other two winners play at the stadium of the higher seed. In the 2025-26 AFC playoffs, that sent the No. 6 Bills to the No. 1 Broncos.

Can a wild card team host a playoff game?

Rarely. Wild cards are seeded 5 through 7, below every division winner, so they never host in the Wild Card or Divisional rounds. The higher seed hosts each game, so a wild card could host only if two wild cards met in a conference championship, with the better seed at home.

When and where is the 2027 Super Bowl?

Super Bowl LXI, which ends the 2026 NFL season, is scheduled for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The playoffs before it run from Wild Card weekend on January 16 to 18 through the conference championships on January 31, 2027, per the NFL's calendar.
