College Football Playoff Format 2026 Explained: Bids, Byes, Dates

The College Football Playoff uses a 12-team format for the 2026 season. The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions get automatic bids, the highest-ranked team from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt gets a fifth automatic bid, and the rest of the field is filled by the selection committee's rankings. The four highest-ranked teams get first-round byes, seeds 5 through 12 play on campus on December 18 and 19, and the national championship is January 25, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

That is the short version. Below is how the bids, seeding, bracket, rankings and schedule actually work, plus where the expansion fight stands for 2027.

How many teams make the College Football Playoff in 2026?

Twelve teams make the College Football Playoff in 2026. The CFP Management Committee voted in January 2026 to keep the 12-team format for a third straight season while it keeps evaluating changes.

According to the CFP's own format page, the field is built like this:

Bid type How many Who gets it
Power conference champions 4 ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions
Group of Six bid 1 Highest-ranked team from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt
At-large bids 7 Best remaining teams in the final CFP rankings, any conference
Notre Dame rule Replaces 1 at-large Notre Dame gets an automatic bid if it is ranked in the top 12 on Selection Day, which leaves 6 at-large bids

NCAA.com notes that this differs from the first two 12-team seasons, when the five highest-ranked conference champions from any conference received the automatic bids.

How College Football Playoff seeding works

College Football Playoff seeding follows the selection committee's final rankings in order. The four highest-ranked teams receive the top four seeds and a first-round bye, whether or not they won a conference title. In the inaugural 12-team playoff in 2024, byes went to the four highest-ranked conference champions instead, per NCAA.com. The CFP adopted this straight-seeding model for the 2025 postseason, and it carries into 2026.

Three more seeding rules matter:

  • Any automatic qualifier ranked outside the top 12 is placed at the bottom of the seeding, in rank order.
  • The committee makes no changes to avoid rematches or teams from the same conference meeting early.
  • There is no reseeding. The bracket set on Selection Day stays in place through the title game.

All three come straight from the CFP format page.

How the 12-team CFP bracket works

The 12-team CFP bracket pairs seeds 5 through 12 in the first round, and each winner meets a bye team in a quarterfinal bowl.

First round (higher seed hosts) Quarterfinal opponent
No. 8 vs. No. 9 No. 1 seed
No. 5 vs. No. 12 No. 4 seed
No. 7 vs. No. 10 No. 2 seed
No. 6 vs. No. 11 No. 3 seed

First-round games are played at the higher seed's home stadium. The No. 1 seed picks its quarterfinal bowl and the semifinal it would advance to. The No. 2 seed, then the No. 3 seed, choose from the remaining quarterfinal bowls, and those two are assigned to the other semifinal. The No. 4 seed gets the last quarterfinal bowl.

How are CFP rankings determined?

CFP rankings are set by a 13-member selection committee made up of people with experience as coaches, players, administrators, athletic directors and journalists, according to NCAA.com. The committee evaluates on-field performance using conference championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head results and results against common opponents to separate teams that look comparable.

The voting starts with each member listing the 30 teams they believe are the best in the country. Teams named by three or more members stay under consideration, and the committee then ranks them in rounds.

When do CFP rankings start in 2026?

The first CFP rankings of 2026 come out on Tuesday, November 3, from 7 to 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. The full 2026 release schedule from NCAA.com:

Will the College Football Playoff expand to 16 or 24 teams?

College Football Playoff expansion is still undecided for 2027. On September 8, 2026, CBS Sports reported that the CFP opened a 30-day negotiating window with ESPN to discuss a 24-team format. The CFP said the step "does not represent a decision or commitment to expand."

The same report says the CFP has a December 1 deadline to decide on expansion for the 2027 season, and the field stays at 12 teams for 2027 if no agreement is reached. The Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 support 24 teams, while the SEC prefers 16.

How the 12-team format has played out so far

The 12-team College Football Playoff has now crowned two champions. In the 2025 season, No. 1 Indiana beat Miami 27-21 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on January 19, 2026, finishing 16-0 for its first national title, per Miami's athletics site.

That 2025 field, per NCAA.com, was Indiana, Ohio State, Georgia, Texas Tech, Oregon, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Alabama, Miami, Tulane and James Madison.

Playoff games can also go past regulation. If you want to know how a tied CFP game gets decided, our guide to college football overtime rules covers the two-point shootout format. For the pro side, see the NFL playoff format explained.

Frequently asked questions

What is the College Football Playoff format for 2026?

The 2026 College Football Playoff has 12 teams. The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions qualify automatically, as does the highest-ranked team from the six other FBS conferences. Seven at-large teams complete the field. The top four ranked teams get byes, and seeds 5 through 12 play first-round games on campus.

Do conference champions get a first-round bye?

No. Since the 2025 season, byes go to the four highest-ranked teams in the committee's final rankings, conference champion or not. In 2024, the first 12-team season, the four highest-ranked conference champions received the byes. A conference champion ranked fifth or lower now plays in the first round like everyone else.

How does Notre Dame get into the College Football Playoff?

Notre Dame plays as an independent, so it cannot win a conference title. Under the 2026 format, Notre Dame receives an automatic bid if it is ranked in the top 12 of the final CFP rankings on Selection Day. When that happens, the number of at-large bids drops from seven to six.

When is the 2027 College Football Playoff national championship game?

The national championship game for the 2026 season is Monday, January 25, 2027, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, with ABC listed as the broadcaster. The semifinals come first: the Orange Bowl on January 14 and the Sugar Bowl on January 15, 2027.

Is the College Football Playoff going to 16 or 24 teams?

Not yet. The field is 12 teams for 2026. In September 2026 the CFP began media rights talks with ESPN about a 24-team format but said that was not a commitment. The CFP faces a December 1 deadline for 2027 changes; without a deal, 2027 stays at 12 teams.
